British National Sandwich Week

In 1762 when John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, fatefully asked for ‘some slices of meat between two pieces of bread’, he probably never imagined that he would be starting a culinary trend. I’m sure that someone uttered the fateful words; ‘it’ll never catch on’.
250 years later and the world of sandwiches is bigger and more diverse then ever, from the humble cheese and tomato, to the majestic BLT.
In homage to this king of stomach fillers we carried out our very own scientific study (i.e. a Facebook poll) to discover the nations favourite sandwiches, here’s what we learnt;
The BLT is always king – With over 1/3 of the total votes, this timeless classic was by far the favourite. Relatively young in sandwich terms, the BLT has only been around since about 1900. We reckon it’ll be around for another few hundred years to come though.
People are strange – believe us when we say that we wish this was a typo, but nine hungryhouse users actually voted ‘toenails and pubic hair’ as their favourite sandwhich filling … We’re not sure that you can find this one at your local M&S
Each to their own – This saying is particularly relevant in sandwich land – Marmite and peanut butter, pate and coleslaw, and peanut butter and beetroot … these were just some of the suggested options that got just 1 vote each. Well, at least someone loves them …
So whether you’re a tuna mayo freak or your cupboards are crammed with spam, we hope you enjoy British national sandwich week!
