Takeaway owners use internet to feed profits

Takeaway delivery services are discovering the power of the internet, as online ordering provided by hungryhouse.co.uk catches on. The London-based website, which allows customers to order takeaway online from a choice of over 300 participating restaurants, is beginning a nationwide expansion and is inviting applications from companies that wish to increase their delivery business.

Until now, delivery services wishing to offer their customers online ordering have paid for their own websites, and then brought computers in-store to receive the orders. Hungryhouse.co.uk turns these old problems on their head – set up and listing of your menu is free. They work on a pay-as-you-go commission, so there’s no cost to get started – and crucially you can receive orders from the internet using your phone or fax, so you don’t need to be connected to the internet to take orders.

Marketing manager Graeme Horne comments: “Every month we’re sending more business to our partners. In December 2007 we had 95,000 hungry customers visit our website, placing over 10,000 orders – an average of £600 per month in extra business for each partner.”

The website shot into the spotlight in 2007, when it attracted an offer of investment from Duncan Bannatyne and James Caan, in the Dragons’ Den. It has since been nominated by Yahoo! as one of 2007’s most innovative websites.
